Technology in our homes has become the new normal for people across the world, especially with schools going online and more jobs becoming remote. All over the world, people have smart speakers, smart TVs, vacuum robots, smart security systems like doorbells, and smart refrigerators. As of 2020, technology is used by 90 percent of people worldwide. With all of these advancements in technology, we have to know how to protect our systems from being vulnerable targets. Here is a guide on how to protect your smart home technology:

Build a More Secure & Smart Home.

Building a more secure smart home system starts with your Wi-Fi router. Your router is considered the front-door to your home because it connects all of your internet-access. When you first install your router, make sure you change the name of the manufacturer, and customize it to a name unique to your household. Re-name your router to something that doesn’t give away any personal information or its model. In addition, it is a good idea to make a guest network to keep your own Wi-Fi network private. The guest network will have no connection to any of your IoT devices (your internet of things/everything that connects to the internet). Along with changing the name of your router, change the default names of all your usernames and passwords to words only you would know personally. Using symbols should be your best friend!

Keep your Software up to Date

Never put off installing your new software system when it comes out. The new update will fix any flaws that may have occurred in the last system, and fix any security holes; as well as improving the stability of your software system. Most updates are aimed at making the experience of your smart devices better, not worse. Putting off the installation of new updates leaves your devices vulnerable to potential hackers and cybercriminals, as claimed by Gary Davis on “Why Software Updates Are so Important.” Try to stay up to date with all your technological updates. When you see an update on any device, it is easy put off doing so, but try to be more vigilant on getting everything updated in your home to protect yourself.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi Networks

Being a fan of studying and working at coffee shops myself, I know this may be a difficult task. Try your best to avoid public Wi-Fi networks, as these are the most common networks hackers can get into, according to Norton LifeLock. As an alternative, you can use personal hotspots, which are personal Wi-Fi systems making them a safer option to use. Depending on your phone plan, personal hotspots may cost a little bit more, but they are the best way to keep yourself safe when you want to use your device in a public area.

Keep yourself safe!

As technology continues to advance, so are cybercriminals and hackers. Following all the precautions will help keep your information safe so no one can hack into it. Technology has become convenient worldwide, but in many ways, it can be harmful and unsafe. The more precautions we use to protect ourselves, the safer we will be.
