It is hard to put into words the eerie feeling of being in your home after an intruder has made their way through. A stranger has walked through the halls you hold most sacred and left their mark. If you’ve never had to experience that be grateful, and try to imagine the effect beyond any financial loss. It goes beyond stolen property, nothing feels right anymore, like someone went in and rearranged the furniture, and you can’t remember how it used to be.

Emotional distress and PTSD after a home burglary can last months after the crime. An article in the LA Times examined the emotional impact of burglaries and interviewed Dr. Louis West, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, who said it best “For many people their home, which they see as an extension of themselves, has been penetrated and defiled, and that which was valuable, brutally taken.”

There are steps you can take to prevent this, mainly improving your home security. Fortunately, the advancements in video technology and wireless communication have led to affordable, high-quality home security systems. We will examine some of the most popular home security systems to help you determine which is the best for you.

What to Look for in a Standard Security System

The Hub: This is the central hub for your security system; it connects all your devices, as well as connecting to the internet so you can access your security remotely.

Keypad: Set up a security code that arms and disarms your system. If any of the other items are triggered while the system is armed, you have to enter the code promptly, or it will call the authorities.

Contact Sensor: there are two parts of the contact sensor; they will only trigger when separated from each other. Place them in between a door or window and its frame, and if opened, it will trigger the alarm.

Motion Detector: It’s pretty self-explanatory. It detects motion. It is ideal for a room with a lot of windows. If an intruder breaks one, it will catch it.

Range Extender: If you have a larger house, use this to bridge the gap between two remote devices.

Every security system should at least have these five devices; the pictures used were from the Ring security system.

Ring Alarm System

Amazon owns Ring, so it should come as no surprise that it is one of the most popular systems available and one of the most affordable. You get all five devices above with the standard security system, but Ring is easily customizable, and adding new devices takes little time.

Ring offers indoor and outdoor security cameras, flood sensors, and panic buttons that can be bought separately and added to your system. But their most famous device is the camera doorbell, which starts recording whenever your doorbell is rung and sends the image to your phone through the Ring App. And since Amazon owns Ring, all these devices can be controlled with Amazon Alexa. If you're interested in finding more Amazon gems check out this article for the best gadgets that are sure to impress!

However, what separates the alarm companies is their professional monitoring. Ring is unique because their professional monitoring is optional. You can simply install the devices yourself and let the hardware do all the work. Or if you want a monitoring service to track and contact you and the authorities if anything seems troubling, you can pay the 10 dollars a month, with no contract.

The Higher End Option: FrontPoint Security System

FrontPoint could be considered the higher-end version of Ring. The company offers more features at a higher price point. Determining if the difference in price is worth it, depends on the particular user.

Similar to Ring, FrontPoint is highly customizable, DIY installation,  with a no-contract monthly professional monitoring service. It offers even more devices than Ring, such as environmental scanning that can be triggered by loud noises, and more extensive monitoring service and customer support.

However, the monthly service comes in at $44.99 a month, not including the purchase price for the devices you choose.

The Contract Option: ADT Security

I have no doubt you have seen their signs on front yards before, they are one of the most recognizable brands in home security. Out of all the companies mentioned, they have the largest network to protect you 24 hours a day, but that comes at a cost on price point.

With ADT, you get an on-site consultation on how to protect your home best, professional installation, and 24/7 monitoring from ADT multiple call centers, as well as state of the art devices. All this comes at a cost. You should expect to pay at least 30 dollars a month, probably more, on a three-year contract. So while you get more, prepare to make a big commitment to their service.

Stay Safe and Secure: Which Home Technology Protection Software Is Best For You?

The financial commitment of a home security system is minuscule compared to the peace of mind it provides. Still, there are major differences in any service in terms of price and features. I hope you now have a better understanding of what to look for, and after evaluating your home, what is right for you.  If this article has inspired an urge for new tech to own check out this article about the best tech gear to own in 2020!
